주유소의 세차장을 이용하면 편리하지만 집에서 돈을 절약할 생각으로 세차를 하시는 분들도 많습니다. 이때 집에서 세차시에는 물 이외의 세제를 사용하면 불법입니다. 처음 적발 당하면 '경고'를 받습니다만 두 번째 걸리면 벌금이 $500 입니다.

It's a hot summer day and washing your car on the driveway might seem like a good idea. But did you know you were breaking the law if you use anything but water to do it?
And just because you can buy car wash detergents at local stores doesn't mean it's okay to use them. There's no warnings on the bottles or in the stores telling you it's illegal to let these products drain into the storm sewers.
That's why bylaw enforcers will usually give you a warning the first time you're caught using soap out on the street.
"I don't think even half the people know," said bylaw officer Bill Bruce.
But if they catch you a second time you will get the $500 ticket. That's because soap that goes into the storm sewer drains straight into the rivers untreated.
So what's the difference at commercial car washes? Well, their soapy water drains into a separate sewer system that goes to sewage plants for treatment.
