2 Cor 1:3-7 Lord, comfort us !
The situation may be worse in this foreign land than in Korea when we face some problems or when we are hurt by others. If you face some problems in Korea, you can easily contact your family, relatives or your friends and you can be comforted and encouraged by them. And you can be refreshed by Korean foods and shopping. If you have faith, you can go to the near prayer mountain and you can be refreshed by prayer to God.
But if you face some problems in this foreign land, it is not easy to solve the problems. And the stress sometimes causes you depressed or make you lose even the will to live. Therefore many emigrants say, "Why have I come to this land ? For weeping or for smiling ?"
Brothers and sisters, we have come here to Canada to accomplish our dream, not to weep. But as we live in this foreign land, we realized that it is not easy to accomplish our dream. Instead we sometimes feel much stress because it is not easy for us to be comforted and encouraged by others. At this time we have to seek for God's comfort. Our God has intellect, emotion and will. That is, our God knows our past, present and future. And he feels our emotion. and he has the will to take care of us. He wants to comfort and encourage us.
Don't ask, "Why is he merciful and graceful to me ?" God's nature is merciful and graceful. He loves us unconditionally. He is our Father. Don't ask to the Father, "Father, why do you love me ?" It is natural that Father comforts and loves his children. Don't forget. When you are hurt in this foreign land, your Father God wants to comfort and encourage you. He is able to refresh your heart. Therefore pray to the Father God, "Father, I feel hard. Comfort me." He sent us the Holy Spirit which means comforter. The Holy Spirit understands you best and comforts you best. God comforted the people in the past so that they confessed.
"Lord have helped me and comforted me."(Psalms 86:17) "You will increase my honor and comfort me once again."(Psalms 71:21) "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."(2 Cor 1:3-4) "
God also said, "I am he who comforts you."(Isa 51:12) "The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins ; he will make her desert like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing."(Isa 51:3) "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you ; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem. When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass."(Isa 66:13-14) "May our God who comforted us by his grace, encourage your heart and strengthen you."(2 Thess 2:16-17)
The apostle Paul faced many trials when he preached the gospel. But Jesus always comforted him so that he could do the works of God successfully. He confessed, "For just as the suffering of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows."(2 Cor 1:5)
And he was comforted by the believers to whom he preached the gospel. "Your love has given me encouragement."(Philemon 1:7) "We are encouraged about you because of your faith."(2 Thess 3:7) "These are the my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have provided a comfort to me."(Col 4:11)
My beloved, God says to us, "Comfort, comfort my people."(Isa 40:1) We have to comfort each others in this foreign land. and we have to encourage each others. And we have to pray that the Lord of comfort Jesus will comfort them so that they may march forward. Amen !
